These were just three of the top trending Google searches in the U.S., among the trillions of queries in 2020. People also searched in big numbers for Zoom, Naya Rivera, Chadwick Boseman and PlayStation 5.
A quick explainer: The Google data doesn’t represent the “most searches” or the “top searches” in 2020, but rather reflects those searches that had a high spike in traffic over a sustained period during the year, as compared to 2019. As you see below, it's all broken out by category.
In the News category, for example, you find the aforementioned election and coronavirus search queries, but also queries around stimulus checks, unemployment and Iran.
Top names found among the People search grouping include Joe Biden, Kim Jong Un, Kamala Harris, Jacob Blake and Ryan Newman. Donald Trump’s name was notably absent.
The President also failed to show up on the top trending Politicians search list: his successor Biden appeared, as did soon-to-be-veep Harris. They were joined by the likes of Boris Johnson, Pete Buttigieg, Mike Bloomberg and Andrew Cuomo.
Meanwhile, the “Near me” category, which as the name suggests is all about local searches, reveals a lot about what a difficult year 2020 has been for so many. Thus, people searched for Covid testing places near them, or nearby places to vote early. They also searched for fires nearby, (presumably to steer clear if possible), protests (either to join or avoid them) and toilet paper, which became a scarce resource.
